Not the stuff of sweet dreams, 'nursery bogies' were creatures created to discourage small children from bad behaviour and keep them safe from dangerous activities.
Ranging in horror from 'Jenny Greenteeth', who snatched children from the waters edge with her slimy green fangs, and 'Old Bloody Bones', who lived in the depths of the under stairs cupboard or some other dark hole, blood running from his skull, as he sits on a pile of bones of bad children, awaiting his next naughty victim, to 'Churnmilk Peg' and the 'Gooseberry Wife', who protected fruits and harvests.
