Changelings

There are many stories in both Scottish and Irish folklore regarding 'Changelings'.

If a baby was born in some way deformed or retarded, it was often said that the child had been spirited away by the fairies and replaced by one of their own, often an old, senile fairy, and sometimes an inanimate object such as a log of wood, enchanted to appear like a child.
